PASSING OF RETIRED LT. DOUGLAS DELEAVER

Today, we mourn the loss of a historical giant within the Maryland State Police. Overnight, Lieutenant (Retired) Douglas DeLeaver lost a courageous battle with a long-term illness. Doug joined the Maryland State Police on January 5, 1970 and retired on July 1, 1992. After more than 22 years of service as a Maryland State Trooper, Lieutenant (Retired) DeLeaver would serve as a Captain with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police Department. Later, he joined the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department in a civilian capacity. From there, Doug became the Chief of the Maryland Transit Administration Police Department. Lieutenant (Retired) DeLeaver eventually returned to the Maryland Natural Resources Police Department, to become the first African-American Superintendent in the history of the department. Doug loved working in the public safety arena so much that he would eventually return to the Maryland State Police as Director of Community Relations. He always greeted people with the heart of a humanitarian and his wide smile. Doug was a dedicated family man. Our condolences go out to his wife, Margie, daughter, Shareese, and the rest of his family. We salute his servant spirit and are thankful that he chose to be one of “Maryland’s Finest.”

Please keep Doug's family in your thoughts and prayers. More information will follow when arrangements have been finalized.
