We regret to inform you that Richard Wayne Paul Poffenberger Sr., 84, of Hagerstown, MD passed away Sunday December 29, 2019, surrounded by his family at Sterling Care South Mountain.

Richard Wayne Paul Poffenberger Sr., 84, of Hagerstown, MD passed away Sunday December 29, 2019, surrounded by his family at Sterling Care South Mountain.

Born Friday March 22, 1935 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Kenneth E. Poffenberger and Janice A. (Kaniper) Poffenberger. He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1953 and remained active on the class Reunion Committee throughout his life. During his high school years, his most memorable moments included being a lifeguard at the Hagerstown Municipal swimming pool and placing first out of 16,000 entrants in a national watercolor contest. After graduation he was employed by Fairchild Aircraft as a Technical Illustrator, where he met his wife, Dorothy of 64 years. After applying and waiting for acceptance to the Maryland State Police, he was hired by John I. Thompson Co. in Washington, D.C. as part of the design team for the first Polaris missile. Dick began his Maryland State Trooper career on July 1, 1960 and retired as the longest serving road trooper in the state after 37 years. During his career, he spent 14 years as the resident trooper of Boonsboro. After retirement from the MSP, he was employed as a security officer at the IRS in Martinsburg, WV. and volunteered as an reserve officer for the MD Department of Natural Resources. Dick was a member of the F.O.P Lodge #77, Maryland Troopers Association, the Lions Club, and the Elks Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, artist, traveler and Civil War history buff. He loved spending time with his family and his many pets.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Poffenberger, three daughters; Vickie Humphries of Boonsboro, MD, Sherri Priest and husband Tyler of Cody, WY, and Kellie Poffenberger of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren; Amy Snyder and husband Mike, Jarrett Humphries, Jamie Poffenberger, Jordan Hayes; and seven great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Wayne Paul Poffenberger, Jr.

Services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 10:00 am, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Alan F. Weatherholt officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, January 6, 2020, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm & 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Interment will be at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
